By Andrew Gans The release of the Miramax film of "Proof" — based on the Tony-winning play of the same name — may be delayed. The New York Times reports that "Proof" and "An Unfinished Life," another Miramax motion picture, may not be released until next year's Cannes International Film Festival. The speculation comes after Miramax's layoff of 55 employees last week. About the upcoming films, Miramax spokesperson Matthew Hiltzik told the Times, "As always, we'll evaluate the situation and do what's best for the films." The movie of David Auburn's Proof features a screenplay by Rebecca Miller. Academy Award winner Gwyneth Paltrow heads the cast as Catherine, a woman who may or may not be as mathematically gifted as her troubled genius of a father. The other central characters are played on screen by Jake Gyllenhaal (Hal), Anthony Hopkins (Robert) and Hope Davis (Claire). John Madden directed the film. Madden also directed Paltrow in the London engagement of the play at the Donmar Warehouse. Proof opened at Broadway's Walter Kerr Theatre on Oct. 24, 2000, playing 916 performances before closing Jan. 5, 2003. The original cast included Mary-Louise Parker, who won a Tony Award for her performance; Larry Bryggman; Johanna Day; and Ben Shenkman. Under the direction of Daniel Sullivan, the production also won the 2001 Tony Award for Best Play as well as the Pulitzer Prize in Drama.

"The movie involves music and actors, and all that kind of stuff," Simpson told MTV. "I play an actor, and it's basically about musicians trying to find their way. There's a guy who gets too old to be a musician, and all of us become his fan club. So it's going to be a great movie, and [studio] Lions Gate does edgier films, so it's going to be really exciting." Wannabe is described as a modern-day mob story based on the offspring of mobsters who defy the traditions and protocols of their elders and embark on their own bloody paths. The project was originally based on a New Yorker magazine article by Mike McAlary and adapted by CSI creator Anthony Zuiker.

Along with representatives from Declare Yourself, a non profit, non partisan campaign designed to get youth involved in politics, Maggie and Jake Gyllenhaal asked students to either register to vote or, if registered, to sign a promise to Winfrey that they would vote in the upcoming presidential election on Nov. 2. Both Maggie and Jake Gyllenhaal said they were pleasantly surprised by the number of students who said they were already registered to vote. Young people will have an important impact on the election, Maggie Gyllenhaal said. Jake Gyllenhaal said that everyone should vote "because, it's a sad time when people have to ask why people should vote." Declare Yourself set up a booth in front of the Student Union where students could register to vote. Maggie and Jake Gyllenhaal brought unregistered students to the booth or referred them to www.declareyourself.com to register. The siblings went to various places on campus, including Lyon's Center, Norris Theatre and Tommy Trojan, and the Alpha Chi Omega chapter house. "It's hard not to be happy when Jake Gyllenhaal swings by to say hi," said Courtney Churukian, a junior majoring in communications. Monica Berger, a junior majoring in business with an emphasis in management consulting, said that while seeing Jake Gyllenhaal was exciting, she was more excited about being on television, especially The Oprah Winfrey Show. Declare Yourself originally suggested The Oprah Winfrey Show do an episode about youth and politics and has been collaborating on the episode since April, said Christy Salcido, communications director for Declare Yourself. USC was chosen as the place to film the segment because Declare Yourself sponsored an event at USC last spring, and Salcido is an alumna of USC and the USC chapter of Alpha Chi Omega. In addition to the segment, a celebrity panel including Christina Aguilera Drew Barrymore, Cameron Diaz, and P. Diddy will appear on the show to talk about the significance of youth involvement in politics. The episode will air Sept. 29 on ABC at 3 p.m.

Dunst
and Gyllenhaal Will Reunite One DayActress Kirsten Dunst hopes she'll rekindle her romance with actor Jake Gyllenhaal one day - because he'll always be the love of her life. The Spider-Man 2 star has found the break up impossible because she's still besotted with the Day After Tomorrow hunk and hopes they can get back together when they've experienced single life and are older and wiser. Dunst admits, "He's (Gyllenhaal) an amazing man. What makes it so complicated is that I don't think this is the end of the story. Maybe someday it will work out, but I can't see that being for quite some time. Jake was the love of my life - he was, is and always will be. But I'm so young, he's so young, I just keep thinking how young we are. I'm still completely connected to him and we are friends, which is fantastic. It's just that, right now, both of us have stuff we need to go through and it's important, especially now, for me to be on my own." |
