This movie takes a big-budget,
special-effects-filled look at what the world would look like if the greenhouse
effect and global warming continued at such levels that they resulted in
worldwide catastrophe and disaster, including multiple hurricanes, tornadoes,
earthquakes (I don't quite get the science of that one), tidal waves, floods and
the beginning of the next Ice Age. At the center of the story is a
paleoclimatologist (a scientist who studies the ways weather patterns changed in
the past), Professor Adrian Hall (Quaid), who tries to save the world from the
effects of global warming while also trying to get to his son, Sam (Gyllenhaal),
who was in New York City as part of a scholastic competition, when the city was
overwhelmed by the chilling beginnings of the new Ice Age. In addition to all of
the other challenges Dr. Hall faces, he's also going against the flow as
humanity races south to warmer climes, and he's nearly the only one going
north... (Rossum plays another student, and Gyllenhaal's romantic interest; Ward
plays Quaid's wife and Gyllenhaal's mother; Serrano plays Quaid's boss) (

Movie
Mistakes
In the scene where
the tidal wave goes through New York and the wave is shown crashing over the
Statue of Liberty, the Statue of Liberty is facing towards New York - it should
be facing the opposite way.
In
the library just before Sam goes for the medicine he breaks up a wooden chair to
make some snow shoes. In the following scene when entering the ship from the
snow these shoes are nowhere to be seen.
The
football (soccer in the U.S.) match we see relatively early on in the film is
said to be between Manchester United and Celtic, in Glasgow. However, the non-MU
team isn't wearing Celtic's home strip as they should be if playing in Glasgow
(it's actually Boca Juniors from Argentina, in a match played in 2002) and the
stadium shown is actually Old Trafford, Man. U's home ground, as shown by the
advertising billboards in the background.
The
people in the library had a fire going during the whole storm. Jack Hall should
have seen smoke when he got close to the library, but there was no smoke to be
seen.
When Jack is trekking north to Manhattan
with two of his colleagues, one falls through a glass ceiling and the other cuts
his right hand trying to save him. Despite the fact that we see his hand
bleeding profusely, you can see in the subsequent scene that his right hand is
just fine.
In many of the shots that were supposed to be
really cold, or even fairly cold, the character's breath is not seen.
When we
see a TV report saying how England is affected by the storm we see a shot of a
street with hanging yellow traffic lights. In England we don't have hanging
yellow ones, we have black ones on upright poles. It's obviously footage of a
storm in the United States.
In
the scene where Jack is briefing the President, he draws a line on a map of the
U.S. and tells the President to have everybody south of that line evacuated. The
shape of the line changes between shots.
In
the final scene when the astronaut asks his friend to see how clear the sky was
after the storm, you can see his friend pulling up (as if floating) on a chair.
You can see the chair handle.
When
Jack is talking about the Gulf Stream, the animation shows it flowing from
Europe to the Gulf of Mexico. It actually goes in the opposite direction, that's
why Europe is warm.
In
the scene where Sam is closing his tray table, none of the bags of peanuts go
flying off it.
In
L.A., when the janitor removes his headphones after the tornado, his shadows do
it a little bit before him.
in
the scene where there are all the tornadoes in Los Angeles, right after the
reporter is talking about the Hollywood sign being ruined, there is a shot of
the Capitol Records building and one next to it, with a tornado practically
already tearing into the buildings. In the next shot there are no tornadoes that
close to either building, the closest one is down a street to the right. In the
next shot of the Capitol records building, the tornado is ripping through it
again.
In
Tokyo, you see a man with his phone, talking to his wife. The hail starts
falling and he makes a run for it, he falls and his hands are empty. But in the
close up, you see a phone in his hand.
When
Jack arrives in New York he's right next to the Statue of Liberty. However when
he reaches the library he comes from the East River and walks west. That is a
pretty big detour around the southeastern corner of Manhattan, instead of taking
the direct route.
The
policemen breaks the window of the taxi to help the French woman and her son,
but when Laura returns to take the purse, the window is intact.
When
Jack's son Sam enters the tanker and finds he cannot get into the medical room,
he climbs outside the tanker and then smashes the glass of the medical room with
an axe. The glass smashes but is jagged around the edges with some glass left in
the frame. In the next shot we see Sam climb through the window, but the shape
of the glass left in the frame has changed completely and disappeared, leaving
no jagged edges on which he could cut himself. We don't see Sam remove it, so
where did the glass go?
In
the opening scene when the ice shelf starts breaking away, there is equipment on
both sides of the crack. When the camera starts pulling away there is no
equipment anywhere, just the actors.
